THINGS TO DO TO A SOLO
1.
The licks can be used for all styles of music.
Play the licks against any “groove”, “feel”, or
“rhythm”. For example reggae, blues, rock,
metal, jazz, etc.
2.
A common trick is to play the licks swapping
between the low and high octaves e.g. if
you’re in the key of G you can play in the low
octave in position 3 and in the high octave in
position 15. To help you quickly and easily find
the different octaves use the fret markers
or dots on the fretboard.
3.
Play the licks in different keys, especially the
keys of A and E. Other common keys are G, C
and D. Eventually, try all the keys.
4.
Vary the licks – think busy or sparse.
5.
Break up into individual licks. Do the licks in
different orders.
6.
Add in other licks you know – clichés or from
other songs.
These diagrams show how much is to be gained by giving a solo the “treatment” using the above
ideas.
