INTRODUCTION
Welcome to lead level 3.
From book two you learnt the scales and
fingerings required for rock soloing.
Now for the real fun part of lead guitar. By
learning the solos and licks in this book you will
be able to create more interesting solos. There
are hundreds of licks here to try. Some you’ll love
and play them all the time. Others won’t grab
your fancy – just leave these ones.
This book is a library of lead licks and full solos.
There are many licks and solos from some of the
most famous guitarists of all time.
The book is divided into two sections.
The first section looks at a particular guitarist
and some of their licks. There is one complete
solo as well as many individual licks from other
songs. By learning their work you will be able to
play in their style as well as their idiom (rock,
blues, 50’s, etc.)
Even when you learn the full solo for a player you
should break it up into individual licks.
The second section takes all the licks from the
first section and categorizes them by what scale
they belong to e.g. minor or major pentatonic
played as E or A shape fingerings.
Learn the licks and solos so well that you can sing
them just like you can sing “Happy Birthday”. Also
practice by visualizing yourself playing them on
the guitar. This type of practice can be done
anywhere e.g. eating breakfast, travelling in a car
or bus, watching movies, taking a shower, doing
jobs around the house, etc.
Once you have learnt a lick, be sure to practice it
in different keys and different feels. Remember
a lick can be used for any solo not just the song
or artist you stole it from.
Read through the ideas on the next page on how
to get the most out of the solos and licks in this
book.
The main solos that are studied in this book are –
Pink Floyd – Wish You Were Here
Jimi Hendrix – Hey Joe
Metallica – Nothing Else Matters
Led Zeppelin – Stairway to Heaven
Pearl Jam - Alive
Black Sabbath – Paranoid
Eric Clapton – Crossroads
Guns n Roses – Knockin’ on Heavens Door
