SCALE 1 LICK VARIATIONS
It is very common to use licks you know but
change them a little bit. This is usually called
varying or developing the lick.
Two common ways of varying a lick are –
1. Rhythm Variations. Play the notes in the same
order but change their rhythm. Think either busy
or sparse. You can make notes longer or shorter;
repeat notes; add rests in.
2. Melodic Variations.
(a) Use the same notes but play them in
different orders.
(b) Add extra notes from the scale.
(Moving between the low and high octaves is a
good example of melodic variation).
Of course you can use both variation ideas at the
same time.
