BOXES FOR THE KEY OF E
In the key of E we can easily mix the pentatonic
scales and boxes to create a cool “super scale”.
We will use the scale from the tonic note on
string 4 fret 0 and the tonic note on string 3
fret 7.
The two areas seem to be a long way apart – the
first scale is in the open position and the second
scale is in position 7. So it would seem that the
scales and boxes would be along way apart as well.
In fact they have a common note and are easy to
move between.
The lowest note of the low box for the high scale
and the second note of the low scale are the
common notes. You can use this common note to
glide into either the scale or the boxes as you
like. A lot of songs mix these two areas. When
playing in the boxes of the high scale you can
leave your hand in that position but just lift and
hit the open notes.
